Introduction
Welcome to my practice of natural and Oriental medicine.  I am not a western
medical doctor and I do not practice western prescription style pharmacy.

I do practice natural medicine, also known as Naturopathy, Homeopathy, and herbal
medicine.  I am a licensed acupuncturist and practice Oriental medicine, which
includes acupuncture, Oriental manual medicine, and Chinese herbal medicine.
Oriental medicine and acupuncture require a license to be practiced in West Virginia.

These gentle therapies and techniques have been used successfully for thousands
of years to treat most dysfunctions and diseases found in mankind.  They are
generally very safe and quite effective, even for the youngest and eldest person,
however each person is unique and not all therapies are suitable for everyone.

So what can you expect?

Together we will complete an initial interview or examination and review of your
current health status.  This will provide me the framework to develop your health
plan or treatment protocol that will be tailored to your specific needs.  The initial
interview and examination are based upon the questionnaire that you will be asked
to complete prior to our first meeting and will become the foundation for your
medical chart.

If your state of health requires additional diagnostics I will order such laboratory
and image testing.  Traditional blood drawn diagnostic tests will be performed at
either St. Mary’s Medical Center or Cabell Huntington Hospital.  X-ray, ultrasound
and CAT scans will also be completed in the outpatient facilities at the hospital of
your choice.  If you live outside of the Huntington area, such tests can be
performed at a facility of your choice closer to your home.

Natural diagnostic testing, such as oxidative stress urinalysis, dark field live blood
imaging, and meridian testing will be performed by me or a member of my staff.
Other natural diagnostic procedures such as the comprehensive stool analysis, hair
mineral status, parasite testing and 24 hour urine testing will be completed by
outside laboratories.

The only tests that I have a financial interest are those carried by me.

What does this provide?

The above process provides you with a whole picture of your state of health.  This
is also known as a diagnosis in both western medicine and natural medicine.  It
allows me to develop a road map of the most appropriate methods that may be
employed by you to increase your whole wellness.

What does this cost?

The initial interview and examination costs are prorated according to the level of
dysfunction and disease as dictated by your needs.  The minimum initial office visit
cost varies according to the extent of your workup, but generally will be range from
$ 81.00 to 151.00.  I know that this is a lot of money to invest in yourself!  Your
whole health, however it is a very wise long term investment.

After the initial interview you will be given a therapy or treatment plan.  This plan of
action will become your responsibility.  You are ultimately responsible for
implementing and following through with the recommendations.  I am willing to help
you and provide such services as are possible, but I am not able to personally
oversee you on a daily basis.

So, what types of services can I provide to you?

I provide acupuncture, Oriental manual medicine, Chinese herbal therapies,
homeopathic medicines, nutritional and herbal supplements, as well as naturopathic
medicine.  Each of these different forms of healing may be included in your
treatment plan.  If you have a particular disposition towards any of these various
modalities please tell me and I will endeavor to work as closely as possible within
your needs.

I do not provide massage therapy, western prescription medications, psychiatric
counseling,  natural childbirth, surgery or biopsy.  You will be referred to other
practitioners for these types of services when they are required.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture comes in many styles and forms.  I practice Traditional Chinese Medical
(TCM) acupuncture, auricular acupuncture (ear needling) and Japanese Toyo Hari
acupuncture as well as German Electro-acupuncture Voll style (EAV).  Each of these
forms utilize a similar principal, which is to rebalance the “body energetics” allowing
the body to self correct for dysfunction and disease.  Acupuncture is the most
widely utilized form of medical treatment in the world today.

Today TCM, auricular acupuncture and Japanese Toyo Hari use surgical stainless
steel single use disposable needles, they are used once and destroyed.

EAV style acupuncture utilizes either a hand held wand or electric rubber pad to
induce the flow of energy through the acupuncture point or meridian and does not
include the use of needles.

Oriental Manual Medicine

The traditional component of health building, known as Tui Na in China involves the
manual manipulation of bones and joints as well as muscle and visera.  Tui Na is
NOT
Chiropractic or Physical Therapy nor is it Osteopathy, although it has been mistaken
for each of these western forms of therapy.  Oriental manual medicine predates
each of these other forms of medicine by thousands of years and is part of your
complete health care.

Tui Na is used when there is a misplacement of tissues due to trauma or by natural
use of the body parts involved.   Here in West Virginia most people recognize the
term Acupressure or Shiatsu, both of which are only part of Tui Na.

Another common form of Oriental manual medicine includes the use of specialize
glass cups to “cup” the patient.  This form of treatment is used to treat
overextended muscle groups and general body aches.  Cupping has also been used
in western medicine.

I also include a range of traditional therapies including Diathermy, Infrared therapy,
electro-stimulation and ultrasound.  The Chinese began using these effective
manual medical devices as soon as they were developed.

Oriental Medicine

TCM herbal therapy, also known as Oriental Medicine, uses traditional time honored
formulas as well as modern biochemistry to produce safe and effective herbal based
medicine.  The objective will be to rebalance the body chemistry and harmony using
gentle methods.  The Chinese Materia Medica (the materials of medicine) has a long
history of safely discharging infections and internal medical conditions.

I have the most commonly used formulas in our office pharmacy, however, if you
have a rare condition or an unusual problem there may be a delay in providing your
unique formulation.  You may refill your herbal medicines in the office during normal
business hours without an appointment.

Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathic medicines originated in Germany, but are now used throughout the
world.  They are a group of very safe and effective agents which are administered in
the smallest active dose, either singular (Classical Homeopathy) or in combinations
(Modern Homeopathy).  The remedy is generally administered by mouth, either as a
pellet or liquid, but can be used topically as well.

I compound many of the Homeopathic medicines that are used by you.  These will
be designed for you specifically and can not be shared with others, as the remedy
was compounded to your specific disease picture.  Often I will ask you for a single
drop of blood from which to make an aquae potentiae, a highly specialized form of
homeopathic therapy.  This medication is only good for a very short period of time
and must be made at the time of an office visit.

Standard types of preset remedies, such as the Infinity Flu Packets, Rescue
Remedy and Occillicoccinum will be available from the front desk without an office
call.

Nutritional Supplements

I have available a full line of nutritional supplements, herbs, vitamins, glandulars,
minerals and Chinese patent medicines.  These are primarily for my patients and
their families, as well as the patients of other practitioners.  You may pick up what
you need during regular business hours from the front desk.  If you have a list
from me please bring it with you to the desk as this will save the receptionist from
pulling your chart and looking up your supplement list.

Each patient has the right to purchase their recommended supplements from a
retailer of their choice.  You have the right to know that I do have a financial
interest in the supplements that I offer at the office, but my  goal has always been
to only offer the highest quality pharmaceutical grade materials that you might not
be able to find elsewhere.

Naturopathic Medicine

The basis of Naturopathic Medicine is viewing the whole body as an ecology, known
as the biologic terrain theory of health and disease.  Treatments are designed to
bring the whole of you into a more natural balance or harmony, what in western
medicine has been referred to as “homeostasis.”  Each person is given a treatment
plan that takes into account his/her current major complaint and the current state
of balance.

Over the last century, naturopaths have looked at the items which are common to
particular disease states.  Modern scientific methods, as well as clinical observation,
have given us a picture of those vitamins, minerals, amino-acids, glandulars and
metabolic pathways that are affected in many diseases.  I will offer you a plan,
based upon the scientific natural methods, that will bring your metabolic pathways
closer to normal functioning when possible.

Part of any natural health building program will include dietary changes.  This can be
simple, such as increasing your daily intake of a particular food group, i.e. dark
green leafy vegetables in folic acid anemia, to complex, i.e. eliminating refined foods
and simple sugars in Type II diabetes.  I also frequently utilize Therapeutic Fasting
in chronic degenerative diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Mixed
Connective Tissue Disease.

I can offer you a whole range of safe and effective measures to rebuild your health
and well being, however, you must implement those changes.  You are the one who
is ultimately responsible for your health building.  You are the one who lives in your
body.

In conclusion, I want to remind you that I am here to assist you and offer you
guidelines to improving your whole health.  Organize your questions and have them
ready when you come to the office for your consultation, write them down if you
need.  I generally do not have time to offer you advice or answer questions during
therapy sessions, so save those questions for your next consultation appointment.

Thank you, I remain respectfully yours,
Darrell E. Samples, ND, OMD, DNBAO,  DNBIMA
